Rhode Island Medicaid: Claims require billing taxonomy
Update: Added additional information to clarify the billing taxonomy code requirement.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Rhode Island requires all health care professionals to submit claims with a billing taxonomy code. This unique 10-character code helps designate your organization’s type, classification and specialty. Claims that don’t include a billing taxonomy code will be denied.
Action needed
Include your billing taxonomy code to all claims to help ensure timely payment. If you don’t know your billing taxonomy code, you can find it on the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) where you registered for your National Provider Identifier (NPI) number.
Additional support
If you submit your claim without a billing taxonomy code, you’ll receive a denial Smart Edit. From the date you receive the Smart Edit, you’ll have 5 business days to correct your claim.
